Bonfire Night Safety with Avon Fire & Rescue Service

As Bonfire Night approaches on 5 November, Avon Fire & Rescue Service is reminding residents to celebrate safely by attending organised and professionally managed events. While the evening is a popular tradition enjoyed across the region, the Service is recommending people to go to public bonfires and fireworks displays, rather than organising their own at home.

Nikki Rice, Prevention Manager at Avon Fire & Rescue Service, said:
“Bonfire Night can be a wonderful occasion for families and communities, but safety must always come first. Every year, we see avoidable accidents that could have been prevented by following simple fire safety advice. Attending an organised event is the safest way to enjoy the evening.”

Organised public displays are carefully managed by trained professionals who are equipped to handle fireworks and open fires safely. These events provide spectacular displays that can be enjoyed without the risks associated with private fireworks or bonfires.

Even though the Service is encouraging people to attend organised events, if you are planning on putting on your own display, you must follow the guidance below to ensure everyone enjoys Bonfire Night responsibly and safely:

Bonfire safety tips:

  • Keep bonfires away from buildings, trees and anything flammable. Ensure enough space for people to gather safely.
  • Always watch over children and pets. Make sure everyone stays at a safe distance from the fire.
  • Burn only dry wood or suitable materials; rubbish, especially plastic, can release harmful fumes.
  • Have water or a garden hose on hand in case the fire spreads.
  • Make sure the fire is completely out before leaving. You can douse the ashes with water to prevent reignition.
  • If your clothes catch on fire, remember to stop, drop and roll.

Fireworks safety tips:

  • Only purchase fireworks from licensed retailers, ensuring they meet the British safety standards.
  • Carefully read the firework instructions. Each type has its own safety guidelines.
  • Spectators should stand at least 25 meters away from lit fireworks. Keep pets indoors to protect them from loud noise or injury.
  • Never light more than one firework at once and never return to a firework after it’s been lit.

By following Avon Fire & Rescue Service advice, you can enjoy bonfire night safely and responsibly. However, in the event of a fire or emergency, call 999 immediately.  Never attempt to tackle a fire yourself.
