Bedtime checks

Before you go to bed, some simple safety checks can help to keep you safe. Here’s what you should be doing before bedtime.

Your guide to safer nights

A night time routine will only add a few minutes to your evening but can help protect you from fire.

Fires at night are a real concern, as you’re likely to be sleeping and so you get less warning to escape. This is why it’s really important to have working heat or smoke alarms in every room where a fire could start. Your smoke alarms should wake you if they sound at night, giving you valuable time to escape but you can reduce your risk by completing these checks.

Follow our night time checklist

  1. Turn off and unplug non-essential electrical appliances, unless they are designed to be left on like a fridge or freezer.
  2. Make sure that your washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher are not left on overnight or unattended.
  3. Check that your hob and oven switches are off.
  4. Charge devices before bedtime, and don’t leave them charging overnight.
  5. Ensure that candles, incense and oil burners are out and never leave them burning when you are asleep or out of the room.
  6. Make sure cigarettes are completely out. Never smoke in bed.
  7. Turn heaters off, put out fires and have a fire guard in place.
  8. Close internal doors to prevent smoke from spreading if a fire starts.
  9. Make sure your escape routes are clear of any obstacles.
  10. Keep door and window keys where everyone you live with can find them.
