Bonfire safety tips
Here are our top tips to have a bonfire safely:
- Bonfires must be kept away from buildings, cars, garden sheds, fences, trees and hedges. Check the area to make sure there’s no wildlife or pets hiding nearby.
- If you do not have a metal container, build your bonfire clear of anything flammable. As above, this includes trees, long and dry grass, sheds, houses, garages and cars.
- Do not leave your bonfire unattended and keep children and pets away from the bonfire.
- Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby – in case of emergencies.
- If your clothes catch on fire, remember: stop, drop and roll.
What not to burn
It is against the law to burn most types of waste, we advise you to avoid burning:
- Wet or damp materials, they can cause more smoke
- Fuel (including petrol, paraffins, lighter fluid or diesel)
