Celebrate Bonfire Night responsibly

As Bonfire Night approaches, Avon Fire & Rescue Service is reminding residents to enjoy celebrations safely and responsibly by following essential bonfire and fireworks safety advice.

Every year, firefighters attend incidents involving bonfires, fireworks and accidental fires that could have been prevented. By taking a few simple precautions, people can help protect themselves, their families and their communities.

Bonfire Safety:

If you’re planning a bonfire:

  • Only burn dry wood, untreated timber, paper and cardboard (small amounts).
  • Never burn aerosols, gas canisters, tyres, foam-filled furniture, plastics, batteries or electrical items.
  • Build bonfires well away from buildings, sheds, fences, vehicles and overhead cables.
  • Keep a bucket of water, hosepipe or suitable extinguishing equipment nearby.
  • Do not use petrol, diesel or other flammable liquids to start or revive a fire.
  • Check bonfires thoroughly before lighting to protect wildlife that may have taken shelter inside.
  • Never leave a bonfire unattended.

Fireworks Safety:

When using fireworks:

  • Always buy fireworks from a reputable retailer and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Keep fireworks in a closed box and use them one at a time.
  • Stand well back once a firework has been lit.
  • Never return to a firework that has not gone off.
  • Keep children and pets away from fireworks.
  • Consider attending an organised display where possible.

Bonfires and fireworks can be distressing for pets, livestock and vulnerable members of the community. Residents are encouraged to notify neighbours of planned displays and be considerate when celebrating.

Ben Thompson, Prevention Manager at Avon Fire & Rescue Service said:

“Bonfire Night is a great opportunity for families and friends to come together and celebrate. We want everyone to enjoy the festivities safely by planning, following safety advice and being considerate of those around them. Taking simple precautions can prevent serious injuries and fires, helping to keep our communities safe.”
