National fire data shows working smoke alarms, safer cooking, and everyday appliance checks remain central to preventing home fires.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging people across the area to take a one-minute “Double Check” before leaving home or going to bed as part of Home Fire Safety Month. The campaign focuses on simple actions that can help prevent fires, including checking cooking appliances are off, candles are out, internal doors are closed, escape routes are clear, and smoke alarms are working.
National data for 2024/25 shows why these simple checks matter. A smoke alarm was present and raised the alarm as intended in only 48% of dwelling fires, while people living without a working smoke alarm were around 11 times more likely to die in a dwelling fire. Cooking appliances were the source of ignition in 44% of accidental dwelling fires, and misuse of equipment or appliances accounted for 29%.
Residents are being asked to complete the free Online Home Fire Safety Check, which provides personalised advice based on their home and lifestyle and can identify whether further support may be available. The check is free, accessible online, and can be completed on behalf of someone else who may benefit from additional fire safety advice.
