Red weather warning issued, The Service urges public to take extra care

A rare red weather warning has been issued by the Met Office, prompting Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) to urge the public to look after themselves and others as extreme heat poses a risk to everyone across Bristol, Bath & Northeast Somerset, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire.

The exceptional temperatures are expected to continue for several days, with conditions remaining hot, dry, and highly challenging for emergency services.

Fire safety

AF&RS is warning that hot, dry conditions mean fires can start and spread far more easily. The service is asking the public to be especially cautious with anything that could ignite dry grass or vegetation. Fire safety awareness remains essential, and people are urged to avoid barbecues in parks and open spaces, as well as to dispose of smoking materials responsibly.

Water safety

AF&RS is highlighting that while rivers, lakes, and quarries may look inviting in the heat, they remain extremely dangerous. Open water can hide strong currents, sudden drops, debris, and weeds beneath the surface, and even in high temperatures the water is cold enough to trigger cold water shock. Parents and carers are encouraged to remind young people of these risks and to stick to lifeguarded swimming areas.

Road & vehicle safety

The heat also increases the risk of vehicle breakdowns and heat related incidents on the road. Drivers are encouraged to carry out basic hot weather vehicle checks, plan journeys carefully, and never leave children, pets, or vulnerable people in parked cars, where temperatures can become life threatening within minutes.

Individual health guidance

AF&RS is reminding the public that a red warning means everyone is at risk, not only those who are medically vulnerable. Staying hydrated, keeping homes cool, and avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day are key steps recommended in heat health guidance. People are also encouraged to check in on neighbours, relatives, and anyone who may struggle in extreme heat.

“Our crews and control staff remain ready to respond around the clock, but we need the public’s help to reduce avoidable incidents during this period of exceptional heat. Please take extra care with fire, stay away from open water, and check on those who may struggle in these conditions. Working together, we can prevent emergencies before they happen.”

Steve Quinton, Head of Prevention Avon Fire & Rescue Service

AF&RS is urging everyone to stay vigilant, make safe choices, and help ensure that this period of extreme heat doesn’t lead to avoidable tragedy.

Weather warning and guidance are available from The Met Office.

Health related warnings are issued by the UK Health Security Agency.
