Avon Fire & Rescue Service launch new podcast series focused on mental health

Avon Fire & Rescue Service have launched the first episode of a new series of the Service podcast Ignite the Conversation, aimed at supporting those in the emergency services and beyond.

This series will focus on mental health and the importance of opening about how being a firefighter can affect us, both on and off the fireground.  Hosted by firefighters’ Lee Ralph and Warren Shepherd, the podcast focuses on real conversations, shared experiences, and helping to break down the stigma that can still exist around mental wellbeing.

Ignite the conversation banner, firefighters open up and discuss mental health.

Lee Ralph, firefighter and co-host of Ignite the Conversation said: “Historically, mental health can be a tough subject to talk about, especially in the fire service. But now we want to open the conversation up, and let our colleagues, friends and family know that whatever they’re feeling, there will always be someone there to listen.”

A new episode will be released every three months, with each one exploring a different topic linked to mental health and wellbeing in the fire service and beyond. This first episode of the new series introduces the themes for the season and explains why it was created.

Warren Shepherd, firefighter and co-host added: “Avon Fire and Rescue Services’ mental health and wellbeing offerings have given us the courage and voice to speak out and talk to one another. It’s made it easier to share what we’re going through without feeling judged.

“I hope this podcast encourages more people to open up, reach out for help when they need it, and know that they’re not alone.”

This podcast is not about giving clinical advice or replacing existing support. It is about starting conversations, checking in on each other, and reminding everyone that help is available if you need it.

The episode is available on all major podcast platforms from Monday, 19th January 2026, including Spotify and YouTube.
