Enjoy a Safe Halloween

As Halloween approaches, Avon Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging parents, carers and young people to enjoy the festivities safely.

Whether children are trick-or-treating with friends, attending parties or taking part in community events, Halloween is an exciting time of year. With more people out after dark and children often wearing costumes that can affect visibility, it is important to take extra care when travelling around local neighbourhoods.

Parents and carers are encouraged to make sure children are accompanied where appropriate, know where they are going, and stay together while looking out for one another. Wearing bright clothing, carrying a torch and sticking to well-lit routes can all help keep young people safe while out celebrating.

The Service is also reminding families to take care when decorating their homes. Candles placed inside pumpkins and Halloween decorations can quickly become a fire risk if left unattended or placed too close to flammable materials. Battery-operated candles provide a safer alternative while still creating a spooky Halloween atmosphere.

Parents and carers should also ensure that costumes and accessories are kept away from naked flames, candles and any other sources of heat wherever possible.

Families are encouraged to test their smoke alarms regularly and make sure they are working correctly, particularly during periods when additional decorations and lighting are being used in the home.

Meg Elvin from Avon Fire & Rescue Service said:

“Halloween is a fantastic opportunity for families and communities to come together and have fun. We want everyone to enjoy the occasion safely and responsibly. Simple steps such as supervising young children, taking care around candles and staying away from deliberate fires can make a big difference and help ensure Halloween is remembered for the right reasons.”

By planning ahead and making sensible choices, everyone can play their part in helping to keep their communities safe this Halloween.
