Join Firefighters in Bath to learn how to “Be Water Aware.”

On Saturday 25th April, Avon Fire & Rescue Service is inviting the public to come along to a free “Be Water Aware” event, taking place at Brunel Square, Bath (BA1 1SX) from 11:00 am to 3:00pm.

1,602 people in the UK lost their lives due to accidental drowning (Between 2019 -2024). With the aim of keeping people safe around water, this event will feature throw line demonstrations and interactive opportunities for attendees to learn vital Water Safety skills from firefighters.

46% of accidental drownings among people aged 18–25 involve alcohol and/or drugs (research by RLSS based on WAID 2018–23). In response, the event will highlight what is often left behind after such incidents, typically personal items such as phones and clothing. Firefighters regularly attend these situations, and the Service aims to demonstrate the serious consequences that can result from entering the water while under the influence.

Those attending will be reminded of the key safety advice to follow to stay safe in and around the water.

  • Float to Live – If you fall into water, lie on your back, move your arms and legs gently to stay afloat, calm your breathing, and shout for help.
  • Always call 999 if you see a person or animal struggling in the water – NEVER enter the water to attempt a rescue
  • River Rescue Cabinets save lives – Located at regular intervals along the river path in Bath, these contain lifesaving equipment. Follow the instructions on the cabinet to use them.
  • Avoid alcohol around water – Alcohol significantly impairs judgment and increases the risk of drowning.

“With the River Avon running through the heart of Bath, it is vital to raise awareness of the risks associated with open water, particularly as warmer weather approaches. This event is designed to equip the public with knowledge of how to keep themselves and others safe in and around our waterways, along with the confidence of knowing how to respond should something go wrong”

Jacq Hardwick, Water Safety Lead for Avon Fire & Rescue Service

Recent figures underline the importance of this message. Between 2019 and 2024, 1,602 people in the UK lost their lives due to accidental drowning, with 56% (901) occurring in inland waters such as rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Alarmingly, half of those who drowned had no intention of entering the water.

This event forms part of the National Fire Chiefs Council’s (NFCC) annual Be Water Aware campaign, running from Monday 27 April to Sunday 3 May, highlighting the ongoing and preventable risk of accidental drowning.
