In an emergency always call 999
At the close of last year, Avon Fire and Rescue Service proudly welcomed three new on-call firefighters. They will provide cover for their communities in time of need.
On-call firefighters play a crucial role in fire and rescue services, combining their dedication to community safety with other jobs or responsibilities. Unlike wholetime firefighters, On-call Firefighters are alerted to respond to emergencies either from home or their primary workplace, provided they live or work within five minutes of an on-call fire station. Their commitment and readiness ensure a swift response to emergencies whenever the community needs them.
“I wanted to become an on-call firefighter so I can support my local community, continue my professional journey and use my technical skills to develop myself further.”
“I have lived in Winscombe all my life and have been supported by the community, so I wanted to give back and be a role model for my children. I’m excited to be working as part of a team and be the first female firefighter in 20 years on my station!”
“Whilst working as a lifeguard I enjoyed helping people in need in an emergency situation, I’m looking forward to working within my team on incidents to help get situations under control.”
Nick, Carly and Josh have officially joined their respective stations, strengthening each areas capacity to serve and protect their community.
The graduation ceremony for the new recruits was held on 22nd December 2024, with certificates presented by Group Manager Paul Smith. This milestone marks the beginning of an exciting and impactful journey for these recruits as they step into their roles as on-call firefighters.
Paul said: “Our on-call firefighters are an essential part of our Service that are vital in keeping our communities safe. Their dedication, courage, and readiness to respond at a moment’s notice truly make a difference in the lives of so many”
A huge congratulations to Nick, Carly and Josh who are going to make remarkable firefighters and a warm welcome to Avon Fire & Rescue Service
