Avon Fire & Rescue Service Supports Register My Appliance Week 2025

This week, Avon Fire & Rescue Service is supporting Register My Appliance Week (20th-26th January 2025) and urging all households to register their machines, small or large, to ensure their brands know where to find them. Whether machines are newly-purchased, long-installed, have been acquired ‘nearly-new’ or second-hand, registration is vital to help ensure the longest possible safe lifespan.

From fridge freezers and washing machines, to air fryers and hair dryers’ appliances are an essential part of every home yet many people don’t realise how important it is to register them. With an estimated 133 million fridges, washing machines and ovens in use in UK homes, nearly a third of household have never or rarely registered their large appliances, rendering them extremely hard to trace if a safety repair is ever needed.

The Register My Appliance portal makes it quick and easy to register both new and older appliances, helping to:

  • Improve home safety by ensuring owners are contacted if a product recall is issued.
  • Extend appliance lifespan through care tips and maintenance advice.
  • Provide access to a list of safety repairs and recalls.

Nikki Rice, Prevention Manager for AF&RS, emphasised the importance of taking this step:

“Many appliances are kept for years, yet few people realise they can still register older models. As machines age, the likelihood of needing repairs or updates increases, and registration ensures owners are alerted quickly if a safety issue arises.

“It’s also just as important to register your new appliances whether you have recently gotten a new gadget for Christmas or treated yourself in the January sales. Now is the perfect time to register your appliance.”

“We want to help our communities understand that registering appliances is a simple way to keep their homes safer in the long run.”

In rare cases, manufacturers may identify safety issues with an appliance after years of use. A quick, free repair by a qualified technician can often resolve the problem, but without registration, it can be difficult for manufacturers to contact owners.
