Avon Fire & Rescue Service and Avon and Somerset Police to host Open Day in September in celebration of 50th anniversary
Avon Fire & Rescue Service and Avon and Somerset Police will be opening the doors of their headquarters to the public on Saturday 14 September from 10:30am to 4pm to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the formation of both organisations.
The event which is held at Police & Fire HQ in Portishead will be free to attend, but tickets must be pre-booked. The open day will be a chance to see behind the scenes with displays from Avon Fire & Rescue Service’s search and rescue teams, a road traffic collision demonstration, the chance to meet the Service’s search and rescue dog, as well as demonstrations from Avon & Somerset Police from their dog, horse, public order and firearms teams. Children will have the chance to create their own fire engine, tour the appliances and try on some fire kit.
Some of our specialist equipment including our hovercraft and lifeboat will be on display, and attendees will also be able to visit our history stand to learn more about the history of Avon Fire & Rescue Service over the past fifty years, and view some of our uniform, equipment and vehicles used over the decades, and chat to some of our retired officers, and their memories of working for the Service.
There will also be a host of stands and exhibitions from different teams set up, with the opportunity for attendees to find out more about the wide range of careers and opportunities available in the emergency services. Chief Fire Officer Simon Shilton said: “We look forward to welcoming our local communities to HQ to celebrate our 50-year anniversary. It’s a great opportunity for you to find out more about the work we do and the incidents we respond to, with many of our appliances and specialist kit on display.
