In an emergency always call 999
Today marks National Inclusion Week and throughout this week, Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) is marking its commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion in both the workplace and the community it serves.
National Inclusion Week – which was founded by Inclusive Employers – is an annual event which is dedicated to celebrating inclusion and taking action to build inclusive workplaces. The theme of this year’s awareness campaign is Build Trust. Navigate Change. The theme recognises that inclusion isn’t just about intention but requires ongoing action, accountability and a willingness to move forward, even during periods of uncertainty and change.
Underpinned by our overarching vision to provide the highest standard and best value service to our communities, AF&RS is committed to protecting its populations across Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire, plus understanding that there is no one size that falls all when it comes to ensuring the safety of the people we serve. From home fire safety visits for the vulnerable members of our community to offering specialised advice to those with hearing, sight and mobility issues, amongst other support, we aim to ensure that we’ve there for everyone when we’re needed.
As an employer, AF&RS recognises the importance of a diverse workforce. Our staff – as well as those who would like to pursue a career with us – all have different backgrounds and experiences, with so much to bring to the table, but all with the same goal: to keep our communities safe and make our Service stronger. There is plenty in place – including our commitment as a Disability Confident Employer and neurodiversity support – to ensure everyone feels confident in pursuing a career with the fire and rescue service.
Chief Fire Officer Matt Cook said: “At Avon Fire & Rescue, we celebrate equality and diversity. Our commitment is to create an inclusive environment where every voice is valued and empowers collective success.”
Michelle Biggs, AF&RS Inclusion Lead, said: “National Inclusion Week gives us the opportunity to build trust through honest conversations, address any barriers to inclusion and take practical action that creates meaningful process. This applies to our diverse communities we serve and our staff who we want to feel respected, valued and empowered to perform their best at work.
“Over the week, colleagues will be reminded of the processes and systems that we have in place to ensure they can be their authentic selves at work and if they do have any concerns, they’re made aware of the support we have available.”
