In an emergency always call 999
Avon Fire & Rescue Service Control Operators answered 24,754 calls in 2024/25, an 8% increase compared to 22,859 answered in 2023/24. Data from the Services’ annual performance report, published in June 2025, highlights how the Service is performing.
The report also shows firefighters rescued 18.7% more people from fires and other emergencies, increasing from 1,037 rescues in 2023/24 to 1,231 in 2024/25.
The rise in emergency calls and successful rescues reflects the Service’s ability to respond to a wide range of incidents – from fires to road traffic collisions and floods – across all four local communities: Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Luke Gazzard spoke about the report, he said: “The increase in emergency calls and rescues highlights both the growing demand on our services and our commitment to preventing fires and other emergencies in our communities.
“These figures highlight the dedication and professionalism of our firefighters, control operators, and staff, who work tirelessly to keep people safe in our local area. While demand rises, we remain committed to improving our training, resources and response to ensure we continue providing high-quality service.”
Community engagement efforts have also expanded, with 48.7% more educational events delivered – rising from 717 events in 2023/24 to 1,066 in 2024/25. These events focus on providing targeted interventions to keep local people and children safer.
Luke added: “Community engagement and targeted educational events are essential to our work. They empower people with the knowledge and tools to prevent emergencies before they happen. Education is one of the most effective ways to save lives and protect properties.
“While we will always be here to respond to emergencies, we encourage residents to take simple steps to reduce risks at home by taking 15 minutes to complete our Home Fire Safety Check and following advice to keep your home safe.”
