Back to School: Road Safety Guide for Families

With the new school term beginning, Avon Fire and Rescue Service is committed to helping ensure your children’s journey to school is a safe one.

We know the roads can be busy, so here are some of our top safety tips to keep in mind:

  1. Walk Together: Walking with your child is a great way to teach them about road safety. Use pedestrian crossings wherever possible and make sure they understand the importance of stopping, looking, listening, and thinking before they step out onto the road.
  2. Be Bright, Be Seen: As the days get shorter, visibility becomes crucial. Dress your children in bright or reflective clothing to help them be seen by drivers. Reflective accessories, such as armbands or backpacks, can make a big difference, especially during early mornings or late afternoons.
  3. Stay Alert: It’s important to remind your children to avoid distractions like headphones or mobile phones when they’re near roads. Staying focused on their surroundings can help prevent accidents.
  4. Safe Cycling: If your child cycles to school, ensure they wear a helmet and have working lights on their bike. This will not only protect them in case of a fall but also make them more visible to other road users.
  5. Practice Crossing Safely: Teach your child to cross roads at safe points, such as zebra crossings or traffic lights. Remind them never to cross between parked cars where it’s harder for drivers to see them.
