Avon Fire & Rescue Service to visit Gambian Fire Service to share training and equipment

A team of firefighters, mechanics, prevention staff, and corporate employees from Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) will travel to The Gambia for two weeks from 18th March, 2025. This visit is part of the long-standing partnership through the charity Gambia and Avon Fire Services in Partnership (GAFSIP), which has been supporting the Gambia Fire Service (GFS) by sharing knowledge equipment and safety advice in The Gambia for over 30 years.

During this visit, AF&RS staff will work alongside their Gambian colleagues, sharing knowledge and delivering training across key areas:

  • Firefighters will provide practical training in firefighting techniques, rescue operations, and the safe use of donated equipment.
  • Mechanics will assist in maintaining and repairing fire engines and equipment to ensure they remain in working order.
  • Prevention staff will work with the Gambian Fire Service to deliver fire safety education, engage with communities, and help reduce fire risks.
  • Corporate employees will run Women in Leadership courses, supporting career development within the Gambian Fire Service.

This visit ensures that the partnership between AF&RS and GFRS continues to provide lasting benefits, helping to develop skills, improve safety. The trip is also an amazing opportunity for both the services to learn from one another.

“I am proud to be joining our team on this visit to The Gambia as part of our long-standing partnership with The Gambia Fire Service through GAFSIP. This is an incredible opportunity to share knowledge, provide training, and support our colleagues overseas with vital equipment and skills. Firefighters, mechanics, prevention staff, and corporate employees from AF&RS are all playing a role in strengthening this partnership, helping to improve fire safety and emergency response in The Gambia. I look forward to seeing firsthand what we can learn from one another and the difference we can make together.”
