In an emergency always call 999
Over the weekend, Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) joined thousands in celebrating one of Bristol’s most anticipated events – Bristol Pride. Taking place on Saturday, 12 July, the Service celebrated with members of its local community and beyond ahead of taking part in the vibrant parade march which began its journey at Castle Park, moving through the streets of the city before reaching Millenium Square.
During the march, the crowds were treated to a lively procession filled with local groups, colourful costumes, and sequins. Watch Manager Antony Dineen and Watch Manager and Digital Project Manager Sean Perry hit the decks and showcased their dance moves during the procession, alongside staff from across the Service who marched with the Pride wrapped fire engine in solidarity of the LGBTQ+ community.
Before the parade march, Temple Fire Station hosted a “Get ready with us for Bristol Pride” event which offered attendees the opportunity to fuel up and prepare for the day ahead. Attendees, which included Lord Mayor of Bristol Henry Michallat, enjoyed a healthy breakfast from Bristol based Cake by Kym as well as plenty of family-friendly activities, glitter and face paint, and lots of fun. We were joined by the South Western Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT), Bristol City Robins Foundation, Bristol Mind and representatives from the Fire Brigades Union (FBU).
Alongside SWASFT, staff were on hand to answer any questions on working for the emergency services or help with personal safety concerns. The event also provided the opportunity to promote the work the Service do in the community, including awareness on the variety of incidents fire crews respond to.
“It was great to welcome so many of our local community to Temple Station at the weekend. Everyone got involved in all we had to offer, chatted to our staff, and joined us in getting ready for the celebrations ahead. Thanks to you all for coming along.
“Every year, we join thousands locally in marking the Pride movement. In commemoration of its roots in the Stonewall Riots of June 1969, the movement is a positive stance against discrimination, and it’s paramount that we stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and continue to showcase our support in providing a safe and welcome space for all.
“I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all my colleagues at AF&RS and partnering agencies who were instrumental in making this event such a success. A special thanks goes to Firefighter Kayley Bridges who led the organisation of this event and has supported our community at a number of other local Pride events as Co-Chair of our LGBTQ+ Staff Network.”
Chief Fire Officer Matt Cook
