In an emergency always call 999
Avon Fire & Rescue Service have welcomed 15 on-call firefighters, marking the largest on-call intake in the last decade.
The cohort successfully graduated on 13 February 2026, after completing an intensive training programme. Over several weeks, recruits undertook a broad range of core training competencies, including RTC training, breathing apparatus (BA), hot fire and cold smoke exercises, alongside essential operational skills. The commitment and determination shown throughout training demonstrated their readiness to join operational teams across the Service.
The on-call role continues to be described by many as one of the most rewarding experiences of their lives. Beyond incident response, on-call firefighters provide vital support to their communities, build strong relationships within their stations, and develop valuable skills that last a lifetime. This intake brought together people from a wide range of everyday professions, including roles in the MOD, police, mechanics, paramedics, baristas, electricians, and more, highlighting the diverse backgrounds and skillsets our on-call firefighters come from.
The new firefighters will be based at stations across the Service area, including Portishead, Chew Magna, Pill, Yate, Nailsea, Clevedon, Radstock, Winscombe, Paulton, and Thornbury. Their contribution plays a key role in keeping their own communities safe, connected, and resilient.
When asked about their experience on the course:
Mikolaj – “It was an absolute pleasure to meet so many new people and learn so many new skills during training.”
Oli – “My full-time role is as an instructor at Mendip activity centre running all sorts of sessions, from target sports to Snowsports to water sports. I decided to apply the on-call firefighter role to make a difference and to help my community. My training was an enjoyable and engaging process where each day was different, from ‘learning the ropes’ in core to the hot container training in BA. Now back to station to begin my probation and excited for what’s next!”
Recruitment for on-call firefighters is due to open in 2026, with opportunities open to people from all backgrounds. No previous firefighting experience is required, just a willingness to learn, commitment to the community, and the motivation to make a real difference.
