Two pumps, a boat and turntable ladder responded to reports of a beached whale calf on the foreshore near sewage works.
Crews attended and liaised with Search and Rescue and the coastguard.
Firefighters used mud ladders and backpacks to help the coastguard to keep the whale wet while awaiting the arrival of a vet.
The vet took the decision to put the whale to sleep as the animal was clearly distressed and had been separated from its mother.
