School evacuated after children fall ill

Fire appliance respondingAvon Fire and Rescue Service was called just after 13.30hrs today after reports that several children had fallen ill during the course of the morning at Manor Church of England School in Coalpit Heath.

The school was evacuated as a precaution while a multi-agency response was quickly put into operation.

Four fire appliances, two from Yate, one from Patchway and one from Brislington, plus two vehicles from the chemical response unit, have responded.

The first vehicles were on scene by 13.45.

The fire service is working with the police, ambulance service, South Gloucestershire Council and other agencies in response to the incident.

A total of 34 children appeared to be displaying some minor symptoms.

Eight were sent home while the remainder were assessed by ambulance staff at the scene.

Nobody was taken to hospital.

Firefighters have conducted a search of the premises and found nothing to cause undue concern.

Some children were allowed back into the school in small groups to use the bathroom and it is hoped that all pupils will be able to return soon to collect their belongings.
