Firefighters have forced their way into a flat after a neighbour heard the smoke alarm activating and dialled 999.
Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus searched the ground floor flat in the three storey building and found a fire in the kitchen, which was also heavily smoke logged.
It appears the occupant, a man in his 20s, had left cooking on the stove and then left the premises. The cooking had caught fire and created heavy smoke logging in the kitchen.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service would like to remind people never to leave cooking unattended as it can cause a fire. Fortunately in this case no one was hurt and the smoke detector did its job and was heard by the neighbour.
A working smoke alarm can act as an early warning sign and give occupants vital extra minutes to escape the premises in the event of a fire, especially at night.
