Crews clean up chemical spill

Mill Lane, Bitton

Firefighters have dealt with a chemical spill after a security guard on a derelict industrial site noticed a white liquid leaking from a van, which appeared to have been abandoned.

Crews cordoned off the area and called for an officer from the Hazardous Incident Team (HIT) to assist with the incident.

As there was no information about the type of chemical leaking from drums in the back of the van crews isolated the leak. Then two firefighters wearing gas tight suits and breathing apparatus used 400kg of sand and 75kg of sodium carbonate to soak up the liquid.

Information and samples of the substance were passed to Scientific Services to identify the liquid and the incident was left in the hands of the security team on the site.

Fortunately no members of the public were involved in the incident and no one was hurt.
