A woman was conveyed to hospital after mixing white wine vinegar and bleach while attempting to clean a shower.
Crews from Temple, Patchway and Avonmouth fire station were called to the incident after the mixture released chlorine gas.
Two firefighters in breathing apparatus entered the property, checked the products were not still mixing and washed any remaining mixture away.
They also used a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear any remaining gas from the property.
Luke Gazzard, Risk Intelligence Group Manager and Hazmat specialist, said: "People often think that if one product works, mixing it with another one will make it even better.
"But certain products, which are safe when used alone, can sometimes cause unsafe fumes or other chemical reactions when mixed with other products.
"Always read the instructions on cleaning products. Mixing them can be extremely dangerous and cause unforeseen hazards."
