Crews rescue horse from water-filled ditch

Wapley Hill, Westerleigh

Firefighters have rescued a horse which had become trapped in a water-filled ditch.

A crew from Yate Fire Station, along with colleagues from Bath Fire Station trained in animal rescue, were called to assist 24-year-old Elly.

Elly was initially sedated before crews in drysuits worked to place strops underneath her. The strops were then attached to a tractor driven by a local farmer.

Elly was carefully lifted from the ditch and manoeuvred to safety. Once the strops were removed Elly was helped to her feet before being left in the care of her owners.
