Fire hydrants

close up view of a fire hydrant name plateThere are around 40,000 fire hydrants in our service area, and they play an important role in protecting our communities.  Fire hydrants provide us with a mains water supply that we can use in the event of a fire.

Think before you park

It's understandable that when you find a space to park, you are going to use it. However we would ask that you avoid blocking hydrants when you park.

Obstruction of fire hydrants could place the lives of you, your family and your neighbours at risk.  If necessary, firefighters will forcibly move any vehicle blocking access to a hydrant.

What do fire hydrant signs mean?

Mounted on a small post or wall, a fire hydrant plate tells us where to find the hydrant, and other useful information about the water supply it provides.

The top number indicates the size of the water main, and the bottom number tells us how far away it is. The arrow tells us the direction we need to go in to find it.

Report a faulty fire hydrant

If you are aware of a faulty hydrant, please tell us about it by using the form below. A faulty fire hydrant could mean that essential water is not available at the scene of a fire.
