Water’s Edge, Lower Burlington Road, Portishead
A couple in their 20s had a lucky escape after a fire on the balcony of their 6th floor flat.
A member of the public who was walking a dog at the time spotted the fire and called 999.
When crews arrived they had to wake the occupants, a couple in their 20s and their grandmother in her 60s.
Using a jet crews quickly put out the fire, which its thought started accidentally after a cigarette was not fully extinguished. It appears the cigarette had been smouldering overnight and then caught light, affecting wooden panelling.
Fortunately no one was hurt.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service would like to remind people to always fully extinguish smoking materials after use, as they can smoulder for a number of hours before catching fire.
