Man assisted by neighbour during fire

Briary Road, Portishead

A man was woken by his neighbour during a fire at his flat.

When crews arrived the man, thought to be in his 50s, was already out of the property having been alerted to the blaze by his neighbour who raised the alarm. He was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

Four firefighters in breathing apparatus used a high pressure hose reel and a 45mm jet to put the fire, which was affecting the roof and hallway, out. A thermal imaging camera was used to check for hotspots. Crews needed to cut timbers from the roof to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

It’s thought the fire started accidentally.
