Building Safety Regulator – Fire Safety Inspecting Officer

As our Building Safety Regular – Fire Safety Inspecting Officer you will contribute to the protection of the people in the Service area and making communities safer by:
Working as part of the multi discipline team carrying out work under the Building Safety Regulator (BSR)
supporting the delivery of services provided by Business Fire Safety
Carrying out inspections of premises to ensure compliance with set safety standards under the Regulatory Fire Safety Order 2005
setting standards of fire safety in public and commercial premises
Informing and educating the community to improve awareness of safety matters.
Some of the things you’ll be doing
Assess risks and legal fire safety requirements at existing or proposed premises or complexes through inspection, plan review or consultation. Provide necessary advice, guidance.
Respond to verbal or written requests for advice on behalf of the Service in accordance with Fire Services legislation.
View plan applications from Local Authority Building Control and set standards for fire safety compliance, in line with the Building Regulations.
Assess ‘Building Regs’ submissions for Gateway 2 projects involving code compliant designs (e.g. ADB, BS9991) and to identify designs that require assessment by a fire engineer.
Work in multi discipline teams with other agency staff, such as HSE Inspectors, Building Control Surveyors, Structural Engineers, Housing/Environmental Health officers and Building Safety Regulators etc.
Maintain close liaison with local authorities and other agencies having a shared interest in statutory fire safety matters.
Deliver training or community safety talks, as required, either in-house or to external bodies/community groups.
Manage time and prioritise workloads to ensure that deadlines and work objectives are consistently met.
Carry out additional responsibilities as reasonable and appropriate, as agreed with line manager.
Level 4 Diploma in Fire Safety in line with the National Competency Framework for Fire Safety Regulators.
Knowledge of Building Regulations together with experience in commenting on Building Regs submissions.
Knowledge of business fire safety policies and procedures and management systems.
Greater depth of specific knowledge of passive and active fire safety systems in purpose-built blocks of flats, care homes and hospitals during design, construction and occupation.
Knowledge of fire safety statutes, codes of practice, policies and procedures and an understanding of their legal implications.
Knowledge of statutory enforcement within a legislative framework.
Working knowledge of MS office applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
Experience of working within a fire safety environment.
Experience of statutory enforcement within a legislative framework.
Ability to work in multi-disciplined teams with other agency staff, such as HSE Inspectors, Building Control Surveyors, structural engineers and Housing/ Environmental Health Officers, Building Safety Regulators etc.
Ability to assess ‘Building Regs’ submissions for Gateway 2 projects involving code compliant designs.
Able to drive with a current driving licence, or ability to arrange suitable alternative transport to travel to various work locations.
Registered or working towards registration with the Contextualised Auditors Register.
NEBOSH Fire Safety and Risk Management or equivalent.
Knowledge of specialist areas within the Business Fire Safety function.
Experience of risk management.
Public sector experience.
Experience of preparing and delivering business fire safety training.
Experience of compiling and interpreting statistical information.
Ability to interpret legislation and translate into policies and procedures.
