Firefighters are urging residents to make sure they get faulty electrical equipment repaired or replaced. It comes after two incidents in the North Somerset area where faulty fridge freezers caught fire, causing large amounts of damage.
On Friday 12 November firefighters from Winscombe and Blagdon fire stations were called to a house fire in Churchill, which was caused by a faulty fridge freezer. Fortunately the family of six were been woken by their smoke alarm activating and managed to escape unharmed, however the property was badly damaged by fire and smoke. In a similar incident on Sunday 17 October, a woman returned to her house in Weston-super-Mare, to discover a severe fire in her home, again caused by a faulty fridge freezer. Avon Fire & Rescue Service Group Manager for North Somerset, Barrie Houghton, said: “In both these cases the cause of the fire was accidental but the properties were both left badly damaged by fire and smoke. With Christmas approaching, fridges tend to be stocked with food more than usual and will be working harder to maintain cool temperatures. If fridge freezers are faulty there is a greater risk of fire breaking out at this time. We want to remind people to always turn off electrical items which don’t need to be on continuously and if they are aware of faulty electrical items to get them repaired or replaced. Fire can be devastating, destroying belongings and endangering lives. Working smoke detectors act as an early warning sign that a fire has broken out and can give you and your loved ones extra minutes to escape to safety, particularly at night. Firefighters from Avon Fire & Rescue Service carry out Home Fire Safety Visits, where crews visit homes fitting free smoke detectors if required and offering advice on how to prevent fire breaking out.
