Firefighters scale Africa's highest peak - at busy shopping centre

The Fire Fighters CharityA group of Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) firefighters are set to embark on a grueling challenge to raise money for charity.

On Saturday 7 December around 15 staff from across AF&RS will climb the height of Mount Kilimanjaro using a ladder at Cabot Circus shopping centre in Bristol.

The challenge, which starts at 10.00hrs, will see the group climbing the ladder to re-create the 5,895 metre climb to the top of the Tanzanian peak.

Shoppers will be invited to make a donation in aid of The Fire Fighters Charity.

Speaking about the climb, Rosanna Pothecary, who works in the AF&RS Control room answering 999 calls, said: “This is quite a tough challenge to undertake and will no doubt test our stamina and fitness levels.

“Myself and colleague Krissy Foster plan to climb Mount Kilamanjaro for real next year in aid of The Fire Fighters Charity so this challenge will help us to prepare for that.

“We are really hoping that the event will attract the attention of shoppers and they will come over and donate to this worthwhile cause.”

The Fire Fighters Charity provides support services and treatment to serving and retired fire service staff in times of need.
