Avonmouth cement works fire tackled by crews

Firefighters have tackled a fire which has caused extensive damage at a cement works at Avonmouth Docks.

Four fire engines from Avonmouth, Southmead and Patchway fire stations were sent to the industrial site in response to reports of a fire. The first crews on scene were faced with a large fire and immediately requested additional resources were sent to the incident.

At the height of the incident around 50 firefighters from nine fire engines, two turntable ladders, a command unit and support vehicles were involved in dealing with the incident

The fire involved a building measuring approximately 80 metres x 40 metres, which was used to manufacture cement, and the mixing tower. Firefighters used hose jets both from the ground and the turntable ladders to bring the fire under control in efforts to prevent it from spreading to other units at the site.

The fire caused extensive damage throughout the building and also affected the tower, but the efforts of crews have been successful in stopping the fire from spreading any further. Access to other businesses at the docks has not been affected by the fire.

At 08.30hrs it was confirmed the fire was out, however crews remained on scene damping down and checking for hotspots.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
