Donkey pulled from neck-deep mud

Firefighters crouch next to the freed donkeyFirefighters came to the aid of a donkey which had been trapped in mud overnight.

Crews from Portishead, Bedminster and Nailsea fire stations were called in when 15-year-old Geraldine was discovered in neck-high mud. With only the top of her back, her neck and head visible firefighters set to work to free her.

The incident was attended by the animal rescue unit which includes equipment and crews trained in assisting large animals.

Using boards and strops the firefighters were able to gradually pull Geraldine from the mud. After an operation lasting around two hours she Crews in a muddy field helping the trapped donkeywas finally freed and reunited with her owners. By the time crews left the scene she had returned to her stable to warm up and have something to eat.
