If you're storing fuel - store it safely

We would like to provide the following advice to anyone considering storing fuel in a domestic address, such as a garage.

  • Petrol should never be stored inside the living areas of your home.
  • There are limits on the amount of fuel that may be stored in domestic garages or within six metres of your home.
  • The rules permit a maximum of two standard five litre plastic containers or two 10 litre metal containers may be stored in domestic garages or within six metres of a building.

Handling precautions

  • Do not smoke or have a naked flame near stored fuel.
  • Decant in the open air – not inside the garage.
  • Use a pouring spout or funnel; and
  • If clothing is splashed with fuel, change it immediately.
