Road Safety

Slow down logo

Avon Fire & Rescue Service does a lot of work around road safety, below you can find out all about the 'RoadSkills' course we offer, with further road safety information coming soon.

What is RoadSkills?

RoadSkills is Avon Fire & Rescue Service's (AF&RS) hard education package. It highlights the most common actions of drivers, passengers, motorbike riders and pedestrians that cause, or contribute to, the increasing numbers of people who are killed or seriously injured on our roads.
The presentations are designed to reach out to recognised groups of people in our communities who are at the most risk of being killed or seriously injured when involved in a Road Traffic Collision (RTC).

We deliver this educational package because of the devastating impact RTCs have on the communities we serve. This is in terms of direct or indirect loss of life, together with the direct impact upon on AF&RS in terms of:

·        responding to RTCs is a drain on resources and directs them away from community safety work, including the strategy to reduce RTCs;

·        placing firefighters and the community at risk every time we respond to a RTC; and

·        the profound effect on our workforce and their families following attendance at a RTC where a young person has been killed.

Logo - young people are twice as likely to be driven by someone on drugs or over the limit for alcohol Our objective is to reduce the numbers of people killed or seriously injured on the roads within our communities.

This objective supports The Fire and Rescue Service Act 2004, which provides the first significant changes in the law on the operation of the fire and rescue service. The act includes a number of different provisions that enable the fire and rescue service to work with each other, and with other partners, to deliver their services flexibly more efficiently.
