Be BBQ safe
If you are enjoying the summer weather with a BBQ, don't
forget to follow these simple safety tips to help make sure your
BBQ doesn't end in disaster.
- Never leave a BBQ unattended and make sure it’s well away from
sheds, fences, trees, shrubs or garden rubbish.
- Keep children, pets and garden games away from the cooking
area.
- Don’t drink too much alcohol if you are in charge of the BBQ,
drinking alcohol and cooking is a mix that can end in
disaster.
Never use petrol, paraffin or any flammable liquid to light
a BBQ as it can cause a sudden burst of fire.
'I can't remember my daughter's 18th birthday because I was in
intensive care'
Darren was very badly burnt in a BBQ fire after using nitro to
light it. He is now scarred for life and can't go out into the

Charcoal / Disposable BBQs
- If you’re using a disposable BBQ ensure it has cooled
before putting it in the bin. To avoid starting a fire you should
allow it to cool for several hours and then consider pouring
water over it to make sure it’s out.
- Only set up a BBQ on the stand provided by the
manufacturers or on a stone surface, you risk starting a fire if
you put it on wooden decking or grass.
- Never use petrol or paraffin to start your BBQ as you risk
causing a sudden burst of fire, only use approved
methods.
Gas BBQs
- The gas tap should only be turned to on if you are cooking. If
you are changing the cylinder, putting it away for storage or have
finished cooking make sure it is in the ‘off’ position to avoid a
leak.
- To reduce the risk of gas escaping make sure all connections
are tightened and rubber hoses and washes are not
damaged.
