Bogus Home Fire Safety
Visits
Local residents are being advised to be wary of bogus callers who
have been telephoning homes in the area pretending to be
firefighters wanting to arrange Home Fire Safety Visits.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service was made aware of the problem
after a Thornbury man received a phone call from someone claiming
to be from the organisation.
The bogus caller arranged to set up a visit at the man’s home –
fortunately on the day of the visit the resident sensed all was not
well when the man who appeared on his doorstep was not in fire
service uniform, nor carrying any identification. His accomplice,
who was sat in a car nearby, was not in a marked fire service
vehicle.
Firefighters and staff from Avon Fire & Rescue Service carry
out thousands of Home Fire Safety Visits each year as they are a
vital way of promoting fire safety messages.
However, we will only telephone residents who have already
requested a visit – we never cold call on the telephone.
Firefighters and staff who carry out Home Fire Safety Visits
will not only wear fire service uniform, but also carry full
identification and drive fully branded vehicles.
And if you are in any doubt as to whether or not the person on
your doorstep is from Avon Fire & Rescue Service, you can call
us at our Headquarters on 0117 926 2061 and we will be able to tell
you if they are a genuine member of staff.
Thornbury Fire Station
Thornbury Fire Station is crewed by firefighters on the
retained duty system.
It has 20 firefighters on its crew, including firefighters
on the wholetime duty system who provide retained cover under a
secondary contract. They provide either full (24 hour) or
part (nine hour) cover.
Together, these community minded people provide a response
service from Thornbury Fire Station 24 hours a day, 365 days a
year. The fire station is managed by Barrie
Houghton who can be contacted on 0117 9262061 extension 613, mobile
07901 511091 or e-mailed on Barrie.Houghton@avonfire.gov.uk

Built in 1980, the station includes a two
bay appliance room, offices and lecture facilities over two
floors. The site, including a training area and tower, covers
an area of approximately 2,250 square metres.
Station ground
Firefighters and appliances from Thornbury provide fire and
emergency cover for over 97 square kilometres of South
Gloucestershire, including the market town of Thornbury, local
villages and surrounding rural area.
There are two fire engines at Thornbury, a water tender and
a water tender ladder.
As well as attending fires and other emergencies, Thornbury
Station staff also carry out work to protect the community.
This includes offering safety advice to members of the public,
commerce and industry, carrying out Home Fire Safety Visits
and fitting free smoke alarms in local homes, visiting schools
and community groups and working with partners to provide a safer
community.
Firefighters from Thornbury Fire Station welcome the
opportunity to attend local outdoor events at which they are able
to offer fire safety advice. If you are organising an event
and would like us to attend, please contact your station
manager or the admin team on the number below.

Community and fire safety advice
Each of our unitary authority areas has its own Community Safety

The CSC for the South Gloucestershire Area is located at
Yate Fire Station, Station Road, Yate, BS37 4AL. Any

Working in partnership
Avon Fire & Rescue Service works closely with local partners
to reduce risks within the community.
We have a strong working relationship with Oldbury Power
Station's Health and Safety Management Team, with who we hold
regular meetings to discuss safety issues.
Staff from our stations within South Gloucestershire attend
the Oldbury site on a regular basis to ensure it is prepared in
case of an operational incident. We also participate in
formal annual exercises, our involvement in which has been
commended as an example of Best Practice by the Nuclear Industries
Inspectorate.
We are represented at all levels within Safer South
Gloucestershire Community Safety Teams. We are currently
engaged in strenuous efforts to reduce death and injury resulting
from road traffic collisions in our area.
Our station
plan
All Avon Fire & Rescue Service stations produce an
Annual Station Plan, designed to inform the public of the
actions and activities we will be undertaking to make your
community safer. View the
Thornbury Station Action Plan here.
