A 12-year-old boy saved the day at this incident following a
Lifeskills course at the Create Centre two weeks ago, where he
learnt what to do in event of a fire.
The boy was at home with his 17-year-old brother while their
mother quickly popped out to the shops. The family were due to have
traditional deep fried chips and the oil was on the hob heating up.
The oil overheated and caught fire. The 12-year-old son smelt the
smoke and on discovering the fire followed the steps he had learnt
at LifeSkills - he did not attempt to tackle the flames, shut the
door on the fire, got himself and his brother outside and called
999. Crews said that his quick actions saved the day and meant the
fire was confined to the kitchen.
