Woman treated for smoke inhalation after chip pan fire

A 51-year-old woman has been given oxygen by firefighters after a fire in her kitchen.

When firefighters arrived at the property the woman was already outside.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the premises and tackled the fire using a high pressure hose reel.

It’s thought the woman had been using a chip pan, which caught fire. She acted correctly by not trying to tackle the fire herself. Instead she quickly left the property and dialled 999.

The kitchen was left damaged by fire and smoke, with the rest of the flat damaged by smoke.

Crews called upon the Red Cross Victim Support Unit, which is based as Keynsham Fire Station and staffed by volunteers, to help rehouse the woman.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service would like to remind people to take care when using chip pans and never try to tackle a fire it the pan catches light. If the oil begins to smoke the heat should be turned off.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service recommends the use of thermostatically controlled deep fat fryers as a much safer alternative.
