Woman given oxygen after chimney fire

A woman in her 30s has been given oxygen therapy by firefighters after the chimney of the house next door caught fire.

When crews arrived they found the chimney well alight and smoke filling the house affected and the house next door.

Because the chimney was connected to a wood burning stove with a back boiler crews had to disconnect the pipe work.

They then used chimney rods and a stirrup pump to get water up the chimney. Water was also sprayed down the chimney using the turntable ladder from above.

Smoke from the fire affected the woman’s asthma, so crews gave her oxygen therapy. She was not taken to hospital.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service would like to remind people with wood fires to ensure they have the chimney swept every three months as a build up of soot and debris can catch fire. People with coal and other fuel fires should have their chimneys swept annually.
