Water relay and bob cat go to action at barn fire

Monday 23 November
20.16, A370, Cleeve, Bristol

When crews from Yatton and Clevedon arrived at this incident they found a well developed fire in an open sided Dutch barn, involving large quantities of wood, a Landrover, a diesel tank and various farm equipment. With adjoining outbuildings, stables and a cottage, crews feared that the quickly spreading fire would take hold of these buildings also. With the farm situated some way off the main road access to water was a priority, so additional appliances from Bedminster, Weston-super-Mare and Winscombe were called in to help set up a water relay and lay hose from the A370 up to the property.

Barn fire The USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) bob cat was called for to dig out the large pile of wood to enable firefighters to fully dampen down with water and extinguish the intense fire and heat.

A number of Flexi Officers were called to the scene, alongside Fire Investigation to try to determine the cause of the fire.

Four firefighters in breathing apparatus tackled the fire to contend with the large quantities of smoke, with three hose reels and two jets used on the blaze. Luckily crews managed to stop the spread of the fire.

Crews from Bedminster, Brislington and Patchway returned during the night and through the early hours to dampen down and monitor remaining hot spots.

Fire Investigation will return in daylight hours to continue their investigation into the cause.
