The 1,000th tenant
of North Somerset’s largest landlord has received fire safety
advice in her home, thanks to a partnership between Avon Fire &
Rescue Service (AF&RS), NSHousing and Quadron.
Mary Amey, from
Weston-super-Mare, is the latest NSHousing tenant to receive a Home
Fire Safety Visit since the partnership was formed in September
2009.
Through the
partnership, staff from Quadron, which carries out maintenance for
the housing association, have been trained by firefighters from
AF&RS to deliver fire safety advice as part of their standard
inspections.
During the visits
to local homes they discuss fire safety issues with tenants and
provide information and leaflets. The most at risk tenants are
referred on to AF&RS staff who revisit the home to provide more
specific help and advice.
Mrs Amey, who has
lived at the Laburnum Court residence for the last two and a half
years, has had experience of fire in her home before.
She said: “Me and
my husband lived at Monica Wills House in Bedminster which had a
fire in 2006 – it was not a very nice experience.
“Knowing the
damage fire can cause, I feel that I am more aware of preventing
fire in my home, although this visit has given me some
reassurance.”
Barrie Houghton,
AF&RS Group Manager for North Somerset added: “This partnership
is one that has great benefits for some of the more vulnerable
members of our community. I’m delighted that something that stemmed
from such a simple idea, has already led to 1,000 residents being
safer in their homes.”
AF&RS carries out Home Fire Safety Visits for people living
in Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and
South Gloucestershire.
