Firefighters from
Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) will be helping to lay
the foundations of what will become the South West’s largest straw
bale structure at an event in Failand tomorrow.
AF&RS has
sponsored two Modcell panels, which will form part of the exterior
walls of the new Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) building.
Three panels will
be put into place during the work on Friday, with the remaining 40
due to complete the building over the next few weeks. When
finished, the structure will be transported to KWMC’s base at
Leinster Avenue in Knowle West and placed into the frame.
Jerry O’Brien,
AF&RS’s Deputy Chief Fire Officer, said: “We are very pleased
to be supporting and working with Knowle West Media Centre on this
exciting project. It seems appropriate that we are reinforcing our
partnership by literally creating part of the fabric of the
structure.
"This building will stand for a long time in the heart of our
community and we look forward to working with Knowle West Media
Centre in the future.”
The new building,
which is due for completion early next year, will include training
and meeting rooms, production suites, sound studios and exhibition
space.
The straw panels
will be rendered with lime plaster to make them fire and
weatherproof – a modern use of old technology that will have less
impact on the environment.
