As the Easter weekend approaches, DIY enthusiasts are being
given a timely reminder to stay safe as they tackle those essential
house and garden jobs.
Bank Holidays are often seen as the ideal opportunity to take on
the projects that have been building up over the winter months and
Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) is asking people to take
extra care.
Andy Colgan, head of Community Safety at AF&RS said:
“Experience shows that at this time of year there is an increase in
calls to the emergency services which have been caused by
DIY-related activities.
“These range from fires ignited by blow torches involved in
paint stripping, to electrical appliances and other equipment which
may have been stored in a damp garage or shed over the winter
period.”
Andy has the following advice for anyone thinking of embarking
on a DIY project:
- Use the right tool for the job
- Make sure children and pets are safely away
- Keep your workspace clear of obstructions
- If you have to check or repair an electrical tool turn it off
at the mains
- Always uncoil electrical extension cables fully, as these can
overheat and cause a fire
- Never use multi-way adaptors when working with high amperage
tools; and
- Always check where electric wiring is running behind walls
before attempting to drill holes.
He added: “And while you’ve got your DIY tools out, why not put
up a smoke alarm? If you don’t have time to put one up or are not
sure how to do it, why not give us a call?”
As part of its Home Fire Safety Visit, AF&RS will fit free
ten-year smoke alarms and check for fire hazards in the home.
During the visit, firefighters can also advise on how any other
safety concerns homeowners may have.
