A scheme set up to remove abandoned vehicles before they become
a target for arson has saved taxpayers across the Avon area over
£6.5m this year.
By taking more than 1,000 abandoned vehicles off our streets
since last year, Car Clear has helped remove the temptation for
arsonists.
Based at Bath Fire Station, the scheme is part of the Arson Task
Force – an initiative led by Avon Fire & Rescue Service
(AF&RS) and Avon & Somerset Constabulary. The scheme also
involves Bristol City Council, Bath and North East Somerset
District Council, South Gloucestershire District Council and North
Somerset District Council and three district councils in
Somerset.
Along with the obvious dangers to life and property caused by
car fires, there are huge financial costs for the taxpayer – each
vehicle removed saves around £4,400 in terms of fire service and
police time, insurance and clean-up costs.
Vehicle fires also take their toll on the environment, but this
damage has also been cut as a result of Car Clear - each vehicle
removed and not set alight represents a carbon dioxide saving of
4.3 tonnes.
Councillor Terry Walker, chair of Avon Fire Authority, said:
“The Arson Task Force has proved to be a wise investment for Avon
Fire Authority and demonstrates how spending a little money on
prevention can reap not only huge financial benefits, but also help
to create better and safer environments.”
Martin Glanvill, Arson Task Force manager, said: “Car Clear has
been a huge success over the last six years and during this time we
have seen a big reduction in the number of vehicle fires.
“These types of fires are more than just a problem for car
owners - they are also a nuisance to the community as a whole.”
