Parents and carers are being invited to have their child car
seats checked by experts at a road safety event taking place next
Monday.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) has teamed up with
Mothercare, Britax and South Gloucestershire’s Road Safety Team for
a child car safety day at Kingswood Fire Station on Monday 24
May.
Previous checks on children’s car seats carried out across the
UK suggest that as many as eight out of ten aren’t fitted
correctly. If properly restrained a child is 90% less likely to be
killed in a collision.
Between 10am and 1pm, qualified staff from Mothercare and Britax
will be at the station carrying out checks on children’s car seats
to ensure they are fitted properly. Firefighters will be on hand to
offer advice on road safety, alongside members of South
Gloucestershire Council’s Road Safety team who will carry out eye
tests for drivers.
On the day young car passengers will be given stickers promoting
child seat safety designed by pupils from three local primary
schools, St Stephen’s Church of England, Our Lady of Lourdes and
Christchurch Church of England Schools. Earlier this month Red
Watch from Kingswood Fire Station visited St Stephen’s Primary
School to present certificates to winners of the sticker
competition.
Kingswood Station Manager Matt Peskett said: “Next Monday’s
event is a fantastic opportunity for anyone with kids to come along
to the station and get some great advice on how to keep their
little ones safe in the car.
“As well as firefighters, there will be representatives from
Mothercare, car seat makers Britax and South Gloucestershire’s Road
Safety Team who all bring with them vast experience in road
safety.”
