Members of the Bath Islamic Society have visited Bath Fire
Station as part of a project to forge links between the city’s
firefighters and its Muslim community.

During the meeting on Monday 22 March members of Bath Fire
Station’s Blue Watch gained an insight into Islamic values and
beliefs.
Statistics show that people from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME)
groups are more at risk from fire.
As part of the partnership the Bath Islamic Society also
delivered a course to the firefighters, which has already proved
successful for police officers.
Speaking about the partnership Watch Manager, Shane Saunders,
said: “This has proved to be a very insightful day for our crews.
We are always looking for ways to engage with different groups in
our community as part of our efforts to reduce the risk of fire. We
also hope this initiative will encourage young Muslims to consider
the fire service as a potential career.
“We have recently visited the mosque in the centre of Bath to
talk to the members about fire safety and encourage everyone to fit
smoke detectors in their homes, as they can act as a vital early
warning sign that a fire has broken out.”
Over the next couple of weeks crews at Bath will be inviting
other members of the Bath Islamic Society to the fire station, with
the hope of rolling the project out to other watches at the
station.
