Firefighters from Avonmouth Fire Station will be armed with sponges and buckets for a charity car wash this weekend.

The crews from Blue Watch have teamed up with the home improvement store Focus DIY on the Avonbridge Trading Estate, Atlantic Road, Avonmouth, for the event on Saturday 18 July from 10am until 1pm.

Members of the public will be invited to have their bonnets buffed and their windows washed in return for a donation to The Fire Fighters Charity and the Meningitis Trust.

Crew Manager Sean Heighton said: “Whenever we take part in a charity car wash event members of the public are always very keen to support us.

“This event is raising money for two really great charities so we are hoping shoppers at the store will opt to get their vehicles cleaned at the same time.”

Firefighters will also be giving people advice on staying safe when holding a barbecue.

Advice for a safe barbecue includes:

  • Never leave a barbecue unattended and make sure it is well away from sheds, fencing, trees and garden rubbish
  • Keep children and pets away from the cooking area
  • Don’t drink alcohol if you are in charge of the barbecue
  • If you are using a disposable barbecue ensure it has fully cooled before putting it in a bin
  • Never use petrol or paraffin to start you barbecue as you risk casuing a sudden burst of fire. Only use approved barbecue products
  • When using a gas barbecue the tap should be turned on only when cooking.
