Pupils at a South Gloucestershire school have been learning how
to stay safe this Christmas.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service has been taking its innovative
internet television channel FireTV to schools in the area in the
run up to the festive season.
Staff from the service’s Community Safety Team visited
Abbotswood Primary School in Yate, where they encouraged the
children to become Christmas fire safety champions. Using FireTV
they watched films and played interactive fire safety games, where
they learnt a range of safety measures, including:
- Never to play with candles and tell mum and dad to keep them
away from the Christmas tree or furniture.
- Make sure family and guests staying over the festive period
know what to do in an emergency. Have a fire escape plan.
- Ask parents to check the battery in smoke alarms, as well as
cleaning it to remove any dust.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service Community Safety Officer for
South Gloucestershire, Stuart Matthews, said: “This has been an
ideal time to get our safety message to children, in the hope they
will pass them on to their parents. We want everyone to have a very
safe Christmas and using FireTV is an ideal way to get our messages
to young people as it contains lots of fun and interactive safety
initiatives.”
