Firefighters from Bath raised an incredible £1,597.09 for the
Haiti earthquake appeal during a car wash on Monday 25
January.
Blue Watch arranged the event to raise funds for the
Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) and Search and Rescue
Assistance in Disasters (SARAID), a British charity which had
volunteers from Avon Fire & Rescue Service on the Caribbean
island.
On Monday 25 January crews offered to clean cars of
motorists passing the Cleveland Bridge fire station in return for a
donation. Firefighters were also joined by players
from Bath Rugby’s squad who grabbed brushes and sponges to
help out.
Shane Saunders, Blue Watch Manager at Bath, said: “The whole
Watch was so moved by the television coverage from Haiti, we wanted
to do something to show our support to all those who lost their
homes and the volunteers from international rescue organisations
who put their own lives on hold to help.”
Among those involved in the search and rescue efforts in
Haiti were Avon Fire & Rescue Service Crew Manager
Paul Incledon and Station Manager Rob Davis, who lives in Bath. The
pair are members of SARAID, a charity that draws on volunteers from
all walks of life who train to respond to emergencies and natural
disasters anywhere in the world.
The charity’s mission in Haiti was expected to cost more than
£10,000 and as SARAID is funded entirely through public
donations it urgently needs more money.
Watch Manager Saunders added: “Both the DEC and SARAID are
hugely deserving of the money we raised, so I want to say a big
thank you to the people of Bath who turned out in force to
support us."
