Firefighters at two Avon Fire & Rescue Service stations will be
showing their support for people in earthquake-hit Haiti by holding
charity car washes this week.
Crews at Avonmouth and Nailsea Fire Stations have organised the
events to raise funds for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC)
appeal and Search and Rescue Assistance in Disasters (SARAID), a
British charity which had volunteers on the Caribbean island.
Among them were two AF&RS firefighters, Station Manager Rob
Davis and Crew Manager Paul Incledon. Paul is a member of
AF&RS’s Urban Search and Rescue Team based at Nailsea Fire
Station.
On Friday 29 January firefighters at Avonmouth Fire Station will
be washing cars at the St Andrews Road station between 10am and
2pm. The following day, Saturday 30 January, crews at Nailsea Fire
Station on Pound Lane, Nailsea will pick up their sponges between
9am and 3pm. They are set to be joined by players from Nailsea and
Backwell RFC’s youth team.
Today (Monday) firefighters in Bath raised several hundred
pounds at a car wash in support of the two charities.
Nailsea Station Manager Gary Carr-Smith: “It’s hard to
comprehend the devastation that is facing people in Haiti and the
scenes that greeted those from the international rescue
community.
“We are all incredibly proud Paul and Rob’s efforts, those of
their colleagues in SARAID and of search and rescue teams from
around the world.”
SARAID is a charity that draws on volunteers from all walks of
life who train to respond to emergencies and natural disasters
anywhere in the world. The charity’s mission in Haiti is expected
to have cost £10,000 and as SARAID is funded entirely through
public donations it urgently needs more money.
Gary added: “I hope people from the local areas will support
these two car washes, which will generate much needed income for
the two charities. No matter how big or small a donation is, every
penny truly counts.”
